A truly humbling experience

1500 Hrs, Queenstown Sec

YSOSRS FC 0 St Andrews 4

A really simple report for this game it shall be. The scoreline didn't really say it all as we did try our best to score as usual. AhCool had a great chance to put us 1-0 up but unfortunately could not muster enough power to slot it pass the keeper from close range, Santosh had a wonderous outside foot shot that was dipping under the bar till the keeper tipped it over speculatively. Finally, Farhan brought down a nice chip over the Scottish backline and produced a stinging half volley inside the box that had goal written all over it, only to see the keeper somehow keep it all.

That was a summary of our most clear cut opportunities as it was an odd game. Heading into it with a relatively relaxed attitude, we dominated the early exchanges until the scots got themselves a break. A second goal just before the half for them just rubbed salt into our wounds. We tried to wake up in the 2nd half but subsequently shipped 2 more to finish the game 4-0. On the wrong end of the score indeed.

What the scoreline did not show was that the boys never stopped playing. Heads went down yes, but we continued to encourage each other and tried our best to play on. Arguably a harsh scoreline but nonetheless, something we have to accept.

MOTM: Weisheng who did well in the 1st half in particular as he was one of the few who really showed appetite for the game.

Gaffers words: 1 more game against ISA in the league. No significance in the context of the league table for us as we have 3rd position sealed. Make no mistake about it though as we have it all to play for. Pride in particular. We also have the small matter of a cup final the week after and I'm sure the 4-0 scoreline has had us licking our wounds. No one likes to lose especially with us being a bunch of really competitive peeps. A bitter pill to swallow but that is football. Regroup, keep on believing and move on boys. I've already spoken to certain individuals as to what we could have done better for yesterday's game. Keep it mind.

Playing till the end

Time: Be there by 2.20 PM
[We were flagged late by them last time round. Be prompt okay]

Opponents: St Andrews

Venue: Queenstown Sec (Astro)

Attire: White Nike Top, Black Shorts and Black Socks
[Bring your own white jerseys for the time being]

As United would call City their noisy neighbours, we can probably say the same of St Andrews who have never failed to let us know that we were in a proper game when facing up against them. Physical, vocal and always looking for a challenge. Nonetheless, 3 points remain up for grabs and with them really needing them to ensure survival in the top division, they will be coming at us all guns blazing. For us on the other hand, although 3rd place has been sealed, we remain in contention for 2nd place despite our lost to FM last week. We shall use the remaining 2 games in the league as prep for the cup final game against Intense come 5th of November. Let's go out there to have fun but also win the game yo. Keep it going jokers!

Let's talk about the positives

1st Toa Payoh Sec, 1500 Hrs

YSOSRS FC 1 FMFC 2

(Calvin x1)

As per the title of this post, I'm gonna concentrate on the positives. Yes we were defeated with a goal in the dying moments of the game but the truth was after conceding an early goal to a glorious freekick by the opposing captain (Law and those in the wall may argue otherwise. Apologies if it was my bad), we more than held our own in the game and probably deserved at least a draw today.

Facing a team that had plummeted their opponents 9-1, 8-0 and 6-0 in the last 3 games, we were never gonna go gung ho against them. Unfortunately for us, when it came down hopefully having lady luck smile down on us, she failed to show us any generosity for we failed to get the rub of the green with certain referee-ing decisions plus of course, failing to convert one or 2 really decent chances. No blame for those boys though as they tried their very best.

Very good goal for us to equalise and send us all to heaven for a moment or 2 as Santosh was released down the right in one of those rare moments this afternoon, sending in a delightful cross that eluded all of the FM defenders, the ball found it's way to Calvin who finished it superbly to keep up his record of a goal a game. Class dude. Keep it going my man.

Much blame can be attached to anyone for the way we conceded the 2nd goal as the midfielders (me included) failed to win the 1st ball and then the defenders failing to read the danger. But hey, shit happens and unfortunately for us, it resulted in the winning goal for our opponents. Just think about it boys, and then move on. Let's aim to end the season on a high with 2 more games to go.

MOTM: Chi was my MOTM today although I personally felt Amin and Syafiq were both really decent. It is no surprise that our ball winners or defenders stood out more with the way the game flowed. Chi was tenacious in the tackle and full of energy throughout. It is no exaggeration that we were more than able to stamp our authority in the midfield battle during his time on the field. Well done chi.

Gaffer's Thoughts: Unlucky but we did our best on the day. Frustrations galore at the final result but look forward and think about the bigger picture, we grew as a team and we learnt more about the respective characters in the group. Our time will come, so keep persevering and hopefully we keep enjoying our football. And in other news, a little bird told me that YSOSRS may very well have good news on the horizon with regards to the little post on our facebook group earlier in the week. Seems like we may just be a really enticing commodity or perhaps, we just have a very powerful little bird at negotiating such deals for us. Whatever the case, thank you guys for playing your hearts out. Rest well and see you next week against St Andrews.

Eh. He does it again. Damn..

Ulu Turf City Pitch 4, 1300 Hrs

YSOSRS FC 4 ISA 0

(Law x1, Santosh x3)

On our first field trip to the ulu location of Turf City, there was action aplenty as expected. Last minute dropouts, failed attempts at car pooling, boys who overslept due to too much partying or just plain sleepiness plus chicks aplenty at the touch rugby sessions just beside the field that we were slated to play our game against ISA on. Oooh boy, what a wonderful day it was going to be.

We finally got our team prepared and ready to play just after 1pm with a vehicle arriving just on the dot. Thank heavens for that as we were able to start with a good strong side thus not allowing ISA a numerical advantage.

Game kicked off with ISA having the better of the exchanges as their african players ran the show plus some former professionals in their ranks really stringing the passes together and stretching us all over the place. As expected, the acclimatizing period took some time but we were able to hold it together and not concede.

*The away dressing room. Brings back memories of being outfield?

Down the other end, our first couple of forays up-field saw Law, Bib, Santosh and AhCool attempting to net us a goal or 2 on the counter yet we were strangely tentative and non too clinical whenever the whites of the opposing goal loomed larger in our eyes. The best chances of an otherwise energy sapping yet boring half fell to Habib who on one of our counterattacks, faced up to his man one and one and cleverly cut it back onto his left to work some space with just the keeper to beat. Sadly for him and his gradually growing ass, he could only scuff the shot into the gleeful arms of the keeper. Pity...!

Well yes, the other chance i was talking about was a clear cut push on Law in the box with both him and his marker straining every nerve in their necks to get their heads to a cross. The referee however continued to have his afternoon stroll under the hot sun and with his eyes shielded by a pair of shades that would have fashionistas outraged, we were wondering if he was lumbering through the game with his eyes closed. Too many decisions during the half had gone against us and it was beginning to feel like mission impossible.

2nd half resumed with some personnel changes and late arrivals in the shape of our spring chicken, Chi plus the reinstatement of Phileo to guard the posts.. We kicked off after a passionate and inspired team talk by the gaffer. A siege mentality was hopefully instilled in the lads as we were still bitter at the unjust nature of the referee's decisions in the 1st half.

1-0: Apologies as my view was blocked, but an attack on the ISA goal plus a couple of lucky rebounds saw Law just inside the box with enough space to fire a shot at goal. Our reinvigorated player calmly tucked the ball past the keeper with a well placed finish into the bottom left hand corner to put us a goal to the good. Just the answer the gaffer was looking for as the early goal in the second half allowed us to settle down.

2-0: Santosh then decided to take on another beleaguered full back for the 2nd week running after much hustling in the 1st with little end product. This time round, he burst through the entire ISA backline after receiving the ball just inside our opponents half. Running for what seemed like ages, the ISA backline parted like the 'yellow' sea and allowed our winger to double our lead leaving the keeper helpless and heavily exposed.

3-0: Cue the moment where 'Oops he did it again'... Our nepalese winger replicated the exact same move as he did to score his first goal. Once again the boy burst down the left and from a really difficult angle... Tucked it home. 3 goals in the 1st 15 minutes of the 2nd half had left ISA with a mountain to climb and us in dreamland.

4-0: Finally, a whipped cross from the right by AhCool was bundled and spilt by the young opposing keeper as he reached to catch it. Chancing on the gift, Toshie boy collected the ball, rounded the sprawling keeper and ignoring the calls for his goal hungry team mates to set them up right in front of goal, our boy fired the ball into the empty net to truly seal the tie.

A couple of notable moments in the 2nd half with Weisheng trying out his Rooney-Like freekick that took a slight deflection off the wall and slammed against the bar. Unlucky!! A one on one save by Phileo in which he came out of the situation looking like superman albeit with a slightly larger tummy (sorry!! haha) as he dived at the feet of the ISA striker and caught it with one hand. Oh-so-cool...

And that was how it ended as we finished the game 4-0 victors. Hell yeah!

MOTM: Ronald was often double teamed in the 1st 20 but despite that, he definitely ran himself to the crappy Turf City ground with a stirling performance at fullback with hardly anyone able to get in behind him. Often nipping in ahead of his marker to steal the ball plus showing a really good turn of pace to cover his backline, it was only to be expected that he had to be taken off with a cramp. Superb defending dude! Special mention to our backline of 'off-ref-off huijie', herculean matt, always so calm hizam, smiling assasin jason and the cool but collected farhan plus of course both our keepers on the day for a job well done. The clean sheet was certainly just rewards for your efforts.

Gaffers words: Glad there were smiles aplenty after the game and that we found some positives from our trip to the ulu land. The touch rugby girls were quite something i must say but our performance was even better! Law and of course Tosh were on fire and were certainly our match winners in a clinical YSOSRS performance. Cheers for the performance and lets continue to enjoy our football in the coming weeks yo!

The Man/Boy with the answers..

Temasek Sec School, 1500 Hrs

YSOSRS FC 4 TeamCuzz 2

(Law x1, Santosh x3)

Wounds from a difficult battle.

So lets see... Where should I start... Temasek Sec + Teamcuzz = Probably the most difficult combination for the jokers with one being our bogey ground, and the other being our bogey team. That's what you would call a double whammy of epic proportions especially when the details for the game were made known.

To the gaffers surprise, Cuzz were geared up and all ready super early on. Apparently, the word was that they met at the venue at 2pm to go over their tactical stuff in detail. Holy shit. Upon hearing this, I was both pleasantly surprised that they wanted to beat us so badly yet charged up at the impending battle.

Ohhh a battle it was as much of the play focused within the congested central areas of the Temasek Sec field. Credit to Cuzz as under the leadership of a new gaffer (?), they attempted to spread the ball around and truly kept it neat with their play. We however, took some time to settle down. Thankfully it did not take too long before our old-man winger started to cause trouble down his flank with some really smart interchange of passes with his buddy Juffie boy.

1-0: One such interchange of passes saw Juf release Dee down the right and into a whole lot of space! Run gazelle run! Our old man then really delivered as he sent in a peach of a ball that was beyond the entire Cuzz backline and in an area where the Cuzz keeper couldnt come. Beckham-esque indeed! And lo and behold, sliding in at the far post after keeping track with the move was our effervescent Law who knocked home that beauty of a cross to put us 1 up. Weeet weeet!!

Well, we then proceeded to almost double our lead when Law and then Juf both failed to finish a similar move which eventually ended with our hotshot striking the base of the post. As the shit luck of this field would have it, we conceded an equaliser after a superb whipping cross from the corner that allowed their player to head the ball home from under the bar. Tsk. 1-1 it was at the half with plenty of the game left.

2-1: Plenty of huffing and puffing with neither sides really threatening... The floodgates for both sides decided to open all of a sudden in the last 15 minutes of the game. Santosh who had been quiet for much of the game finally found some space down the left as he embarked on one of his trademark runs that bamboozled the right fullback, and the centreback. Zoning in on goal, our man calmly slammed the ball home to the bottom right corner of the net as the boys swamped him in delight. A truly magnificent goal.

Lets see, we however decided to make things difficult for ourselves as the tricky Cuzz winger danced his way round Han who had been defending stoutly all game thus far and Syafiq to put in a cross that was knocked home really well by their winger on the other side. 2-2 with 10 minutes of the game remaining and the curse of Temasek seemingly striking again.

3-2: Narrowly missing with a lobbed shot over the keeper just seconds earlier, our boy wonder decided to replicate his winning formula that allowed him to score his 1st goal again. I could literally copy and paste the description for our 2nd goal here as Santosh took matters into his own hands by bursting past his fullback and the same centreback again before finishing in the same corner. Holy moly, what a run and a truly special goal for the boy. 5 minutes to go and for us, the finishing line was in sight for a sweet sweet victory.

4-2: Alright cliches are overrated i must say. Lightning never strikes at the same place thrice yah. Well, the nepalese boy did just that. Facing up to his beleaguered markers in the fullback and the same centreback again, our boy/man seemingly did an instant replay of his earlier 2 goals by running the length of the half and finishing in that VERY SAME CORNER AGAIN! Oh you beauty....!!!!! And that was how it ended.

MOTM: All right, after all that praise for our boy wonder... It may prove a little of an anti climax but my man of the match today was Huijie. He was a defensive rock at the back as his tackles were timed to perfection and with our captain Zam stuck down by a flu bug, Huijie took over the role of organising the lads. His confidence and desire to win the game rubbed off on his fellow defenders as Farhan and Habib who played in an unorthodox full back position both stood out for me in some really awesome performances. Special mention goes to Law, Fiq and Chi who were dogged and tenacious which prevented Cuzz from stamping their authority in the middle. Well of course, Santosh as well who proved that if used correctly, the boy is a game winner. For us, we truly hope he continues his goalscoring form till the end of the season.

Gaffers Words: Superb. A result we really wanted and we delivered with some truly inspiring individual performances. The fact that our boys sacrificed themselves in unfamiliar positions (Bib and Farhan) plus of course plenty of other really heartwarming acts from the guys today made me very proud of the team. It's that team spirit which ensures that we are still right up there in the division. 4 tough ass games remain with 2 visits to ISA, one to FM and one more of our ang mo friends. Let's approach each of these games one at a time but the boys who pull on the white jersey of YSOSRS next week should aim to replicate this spirited performance again. Kudos lads. And enjoy the week ahead.
