Denied At the Death

Canberra Sec, 1500 Hrs

YSOSRS 2  SKR 2

(AhCool, Izwann)

When the gaffer arrives at the pitch 15 minutes past 3pm with an entourage of players alongside him, you know the going's gonna get tough. Lost on the way to the venue deep in the Northern regions of the island, the jokers were forced to start with whoever we had against SKR. 11 we had. Thankfully. SKR on the other hand, smarting from hefty defeats to both Intense and St Andrews in back to back games were ready to deal us a real blow for the seeming complacency we were showing coming into this game.

0-1: Well, they jolly well did as they capitalized on a sloppy pass back to our keeper which allowed their nipply forward, Naga to slide home from close range. 10 minutes into the game and the jokers looked to make life difficult for themselves. Again

The rest of the half played out to the tune of much jokers possession but little attacking penetration as we toiled around without much initiative. Credit where its due for SKR were first to every 2nd ball and looked hungry to defend their fort. As such, they jovial jokers trudged off the pitch a goal down and looking so very spent. The HT team talk centered around the usual topics of playing for the pinkies and showing heart which was sorely lacking during the performance in the first half.

Off we went in the 2nd as the boys played at a greater intensity and urgency. A hallmark of the jokers this season. Our only wish would be that we could couple that with a more stable 1st half performance in our games. Ah well... to the positives anyway!

1-1: A long diagonal found returning lanky man, Izwann who accelerated away from his marker with surprising ease before cutting back a superb ball to our waiting winger, Ahcool. Reenacting a Danny Wellbeck moment from the recent Euro's clash with Sweden, our man who had been showing an upturn in form nonchalantly flicked the ball into the back of the net with his heel. Oh the audacity... Perfect for an equaliser.

2-1: With the wind seemingly in our sails and a tigerish Law in the middle adding much energy to our play, the jokers powered forward and this time another succulent looking diagonal found Izwann marauding down the flanks again. Once more, a fantastic first touch some him push forward into space before unleashing a venomous strike that arrowed straight into the bottom left hand corner.

The comeback was complete. Or so we thought. With the jokers looking oh so likely to add to that winning run to our season. Yet it all went horribly wrong as we took our foot off the pedal and allowed a spirited SKR side back into the game. We failed to heed the warning when Naga unleashed a strike that went narrowly wide late into the game.

And so it proved as we dwelled on the ball thus allowing it to be stolen by the SKR midfield who subsequently sent in a lofted pass that evaded Hafiz and found Naga all alone in the box with only our keeper to beat. Showing deadly accuracy, the pint sized dynamo lobbed our keeper with great ease to the disbelief of the jokers. 2-2 with only minutes to play.

Oh and we have to add that the gaffer decided that it was not enough just yet. His delayed clearance smashed against an onrushing SKR player before freakily rebounding sweetly for Naga, one on one with Amin in the box. As it looked increasingly likely that SKR would snatch a priceless win at the death, an alert Amin made himself massive enough to keep out the strike and allowed us to head home with a point. Thank god yo.

The final whistle eventually came soon after for the boys left the pitch feeling as if 2 points had been dropped rather than 1 earned with no disrespect to SKR.

Whatever the case, a good lesson learnt and though it was messy at times, both sides were good value for the point. Much to be improved on in the coming days but a fantastic showing from the lads to rally from being a goal down to lead again. Let us do better next time round folks!!

Digging Deep When Needed

Woodlands Sec, 1500 Hrs

YSOSRS 3  Phoenix 2

(Hafeez, Mok, Dinie)

The warning signs were there pre-match when we had our top goalscorer last season pull out due to a last minute deployment. Bloody hell, im not sure when we will ever get to see him... Anyhow, the east side gang and their now infamous bangbus (actually eric's harmless van) were held back due to unforeseen circumstances (Ubai woke up at 130pm actually & was late). Thus we had at least 8 players who were destined to be late for the kickoff.

*Huffing & Puffing. With plenty of tackles to match

Certainly not the kind of preparation the gaffer was hoping for before a vital game in which 3 points ranked high on the priority list for the lads.

Eventually after much scrambling which involved boys being half naked (*censored as this remains a family site) in the bangbus, we got to the pitch just in time to meet up with the 5 brave joker souls who were looking lost.

*Beep beep* and the game kicks off with little stretching and all. So very unlike us, but as they say so often, the show must go on. Anyhow, Phoenix were a much much changed side. Gone were the big ang mo dudes, and in place were Jap and local malay dudes. Boy did the dazzle and make us huff all over the pitch.

1-0: Thankfully for us, a corner whipped in by Eric fortuitously found a Joker in the box. After much swiping and poking, the ball eventually fell to a delighted Rafael & of course Fabio lookalike, Hafeez who slammed it home from close range. Sweet sweet first for the young lad.

*Our young man with his first jokers goal

And then came what was simply in accordance with the run of play. A devastating run by their Jap import saw him salom past half hearted challenges (the gaffer was part of that too. Sucky stuff) before he picked his spot and went supernova on his shot. The pace of it beat our returning custodian who said he felt like a virgin playing goal again and it was 1-1.

It quickly became 1-2 as the jokers reeled from a stunning direct freekick that was planted straight into the top corner by their new local signing. Our virgin just laid there on the pitch. In agony. I have to add, the FK was given away by our boy on the probation list, Yas in his first real involvement in the game. Bollocks cause it got him a yellow card too. *Ref apparently apologised to him for the latter* Seriously ref?? But okay, benefit of the doubt for the man in black for sorry is indeed the hardest word.

HT seem came along as the blast of the referee's whistle saw us trudge off burnt and spent. Seriously last warning for this type of weather. Rallying calls came and went. But I think the most important one came from the Phoenix manager whose passionate calls for their 1st victory and how much more they wanted it as compared to us hit a raw nerve in your competitive gaffer.

We started off the 2nd like a train on fire. More direct in our approach and a whole lot faster to every challenge in the middle.

*Cute expressions from the lads

2-2: The equaliser came when Mok whipped in a left footed inswinger of a freekick. A whole host of jokers were lining up to finish it off but the sight of Hafiz in full flight and charging straight at the opposing custodian probably distracted him sufficiently as the ball eventually nestled into the bottom right hand corner. That 1 goal a season man had struck in the best of times. Just when the team needed it. Ho yeah...

3-2: Fabreyas who had been majorly handicapped after being cautioned in his 1st tackle of the game came on again 10 mins into the half. Some cabaret and dance later which included a couple of leg kicking movements saw him release Dinietov with a sweet little throughball. I believe the Phoenix defender slipped here as our man on a hot streak and with the swagger of Balotelli proceeded to dink the ball over the onrushing Keeper. Just for insurance sake, AhCool was on hand at the far post to guide the ball in. Such a cute sight.

*Picture-esque moments

Back from the dead beechers!! We could have scored a couple more when AhCool missed at least 2 great chances in front of goal and Jason had his curling shot palmed onto the bar. Well, we then could have conceded a sickening equaliser when our legs went in the final 10 minutes.

But eventually it all worked out as we did enough to overcome a spirited Phoenix side. Priceless 3 points folks. Cheers all and await those fantastic peektures from the lovely Fatin once again!!!

Keeping the Momentum Going

Pasir Ris Sec, 1500 Hrs

YSOSRS 4 Phoenix 0

(Law, Syafiq, Dinie x2)

* Be prepared to be enthralled by the chinese version of that man on the right.

Another saturday descended upon us and after much anticipation during the week, the boys in pink made their way to Pasir Ris Sec to host/play/meet Phoenix Utd in our 3rd league game. Hurray.

Positive showings in the last 2 had given the boys much to cheer about and the change in mood within the camp was certainly apparent. That losing run from last season seemed a distant memory and the jokers were most definitely not looking to have that anytime soon either.

A banana skin of a game as we headed into this clash with Phoenix, not knowing too much bout them. Results, match reports and goalscorers were all that could be found from the espzen website. Well with the majority of the squad made up of huge foreigners, we anticipated a bruising and physical encounter. Well, we got just that.

The 1st 15-20 minutes of the game was a ding dong battle as the whole hearted approach by the Phoenix lads created problems for us. With lads almost a head taller than most of us jokers (yes they were huge), the plan was to hang in there during set pieces and cope with the early incessant pressure.

1-0: Arguably against the run of play, or maybe not. But a deep corner from Yas saw Law leap highest to thump a header... Into the sky. The amount of air time the ball had must have played tricks on the keeper's eyes as the ball somewhat fortuitously dipped just under the bar and over the line. The oh so sweet break through that we'd hoped for.

2-0: As usual, much more huffing and puffing with some overly enthusiastic challenges later, a through ball from someone (Yas? Ubai?) found Mr Magician in space. Moving quickly in on goal, the man evaded 2 last minute challenges and proceeded to dink it over the keeper just before the half time whistle. A goal that certainly made the half time team talk a whole lot easier.

Noting the comeback Phoenix had made after being 2-0 down at the break against Retador sometime back, our boys set out to keep our clean sheet and hopefully nick another goal or 2 to make the 3 points safe.

3-0: That much craved for goal duly came when a quickly taken short corner saw Yas stroll into the Phoenix box with time to spare. Whipping in a tantalising cross, it found our stand in captain, Del Syafiqo who duly obliged with a thumping header into the bottom corner. 3 and looking pretty.

Chances came and went as we fluffed our lines on several occasions. Could've been the heat, could've been something else but benefit of the doubt here. Better next time lads!!

4-0: With Phoenix tiring, the pace of our returning winger down the left gave our opponents something more to think about. After squandering decent opportunities on 2 other occasions, AhCool was finally able to come good. By beating his marker for pace and proceeding to unselfishly lay it off for our magician to tap it in from 6 yards.

Game, set and match as the jokers end a tough physical battle early on with a convincing scoreline. Well done lads, 1 game at a time as always. Hope you guys enjoyed the sun burns we got from today. Adios amigos.

A Jolly Good Day you Jokers.

Springfield Sec, 1500 Hrs

YSOSRS 4 Intense 0

(Ubai x2, Mahdi x1, Iskandar x1)

*Sig moments in e game. For e gaff.

Well we were all truly surprised at the eventual scoreline as I'm sure those reading and finding out for the 1st time are. 5 prior meetings with Team Intense with 4 of them going to TI. Defeats in potential title deciders and of course that cup final where we were edged out 1-0. Heartwrenching to say the least. For the jokers, a priceless 1-0 win at Yusof Ishak Sec at the start of last season saw us break through and get one better over the imperious TI finally for once. I guess we all know how that season ended for us. Terribly to say the least.

Fast forward and coming off the back of a demoralising result but positivity aplenty Champions Cup performance that saw us narrowly edged out by reigning champs, Primero FC last Sunday, the jokers were pumped up and looking forward to giving a good account of themselves against TI.

Without a whole host of our usual core players including Law, Ron, Huijie, Hizam, Yasin, WS, Izwann, Ahcool and Amin the keeper, we were thankfully still able to call on the rest in the squad to make for decent enough numbers on the day. However, the location was a tad too inconvenient for our west side boys and we started with a bare minimum just as kick off time came about. TI on the other hand were ready for the game with their usual pig in the middle pre match warm ups. Wah sian...
*Our defensive stalwarts for e day. Class boys.

The start of the half saw TI attempting to use the space on the pitch to their advantage with their wingers attempting to get on the ball at every opportunity. "Use the huge pitch and pass the ball more!" was the TI  call. We on the other hand played to our strengths and stuck to our pre match game plan of maintaining our shape and remaining resolute in imminent Intense wave.

1-0: With TI dominating most of the possession and the Jokers resorting to sporadic forays up front, a miss pass by the TI backline saw Vice Cpt Syafiq pounce on the loose ball, marauding forward with menace. Well, he was chopped down just outside the box before he could do more damage. Up stepped Ubai and after a season and 2 games, the promise was finally realised when he curled in a brilliant freekick that had the keeper beaten all ends up. His first goal for the jokers and what a time to score. 25 minutes in.

*Our veteran winger showing unbridled joy at the opener =D

Then came the penalty situation. And I'm not gonna say anything more about it as the man of the moment probably wouldnt wana play anymore if i did. But we did miss a controversial penalty which was won by Mahdi, moments after coming on. Heh.

HT: 1-0 to the jokers with plenty of tenacity from the pinkies and a moment of brilliance to put us a goal to the good.

Once again prepared for the TI wave of intensity, the lads were rotated around. We did still have the magnificent attacking trio of bai, mahdi and dinie up top with the hardworking eric and then rudee to nullify the attacking threat from the quality TI left back.

2-0: From defending a corner, Eugene thumped the hell outta the ball while clearing our lines as it went into orbit. Thankfully for us, the ball was directed nicely into the path of "star player" mahdi who proceeded to outstride/scamper/zoom past the high TI backline and finishing majestically in the 1 on 1 situation. Brilliant. Perfect timing to deal a crucial blow to TI with 10 minutes gone in the 2nd.

*Amazing man

3-0: Capitalizing on the shell shocked TI backline, Ubai pounced on a loose ball from his left wing position (Yes you read it right lads), and proceeded to sprint past the TI defense and slot home a peach of a goal. He doesnt score in an entire season but when he does, he brings home a brace with him.  Excellent stuff so soon after our 2nd. However as usual, with time to play, we remained wary but quietly confident of sealing out this tie.

4-0: Definitely the icing on the cake for us as re-debutant almost a year on from his first performance in jokers colours, Isk stepped up to a freekick inside our own half. Whip, bam, boom. As he unleashed a powerful freekick that sailed all the way to goal and fortuitously caught the TI keeper by surprise. The desperate attempts to back peddle and keep it all were thankfully for us in vain. Take nothing away from the lad who impressed us all with his overall performance on the day. Well deserved Isk!

*Debutant with that FK

So that was how it all ended as the Jokers claim a sweet victory over the illustrious Intense. Well done lads and savour the aftermath of it. Come next week, we forget about it and start the game anew as always. Cheerios all!

*Hand bags thrown. Not...
