Doing just enough...

Serangoon Garden Sec, 1500 Hrs

YSOSRS FC 2 Team Spirit 1

(Law x1, Mimi x1)

A debut for the jokers in the cup and on paper, we looked favourites for this very tie against the Division 10 Sunday League Champions in what was our first foray into the Espzen Champions Cup.

Sunday afternoon kickoff at a new location for the boys as the ulu venue of Serangoon Garden Sec played host. Yet our immediate thoughts on the size of the field was one of disappointment. Narrow on the flanks and a shorter pitch in general. More orgies in the middle to be expected again. Argh.

Well so it was, an orgy of a game. Messy and all. Yet we coped well with the initial attacks from our opponents as we tried to settle our much changed side. Recent games have seen wholesale changes in defense particularly so it was inevitable that we took some time to get into our stride.

1-0: The first goal came about when Syafiq was released down the right flank into space and the man of the moment cut a beautiful ball back into the path of Law. A strong contender for hustler of the team this year, he showed the attacking side to his game as he slid in and finish beautifully with a scissor-like movement that had the boys burst out in euphoria. Clinical yo!

In past games, the team probably would have gone on from strength to strength yet as the day would be like, we threatened but lacked a cutting edge up front with our nepalese winger out and our current hotshot striker late due to work. Law got close to a 2nd when his double effort cleared the line only for the ref to ignore his appeals as the game continued much to his dismay.

2nd half soon came as Spirit upped the tempo and intensity in closing us down. Despite that, my personal opinion was that we were very much in control of the game. Unfortunately a mistake at the back by our debutant keeper allowed for an easy tap in for the equaliser. 1-1 and all to play for again.

We had a chance thereafter in which Izwann did all the hardwork by dancing past a whole host of defenders only to finish with nonchalance. Some of that rubbed off on the ball as it decided to kiss the base of the post before rolling out for the goal kick. Aiyo-eh-ah.

2-1: As the game gradually drew closer, some delightfully simple ball work in the middle by Law and Syafiq saw the latter release debutant winger, Mimi. Controlling the ball superbly, a direct run straight into the box saw him finish with aplomb past the hopelessly stranded keeper. The winner as it eventually proved to be. Sweet lah mimi!

MOTM: 2 contenders today as Law was a massive presence both on the wings and in the middle. But Del Syafiqo, buoyed by a recent run of quality performances in our league games, turned in another smashing one as he capped it off with 2 assists in a tight game. Yesah!

Adios folks as we meet again next Saturday!

Hot stuff by the boys

Orchid Park Sec, 1500 Hrs

YSOSRS FC 6 Sporting TGA 1

(Santosh x3, Habib x1, Izwann x1, Eugene x1)

Welcoming back a couple of teammates from the squad, a healthy looking 15 men team turned up at Orchid Park Sec. What greeted us was the Sun, smiling so widely as it baked the astro turf pitch with nonchalance, much to our disgust. Hot day, physically imposing opponents yet 3 points were what we were looking for nonetheless.

Starting the game fast as we wanted to, Bib boy who started up front turned his marker and burst forward towards the right flank. A beautifully instinctive cut back to the edge of the box found a waiting Toshie boy who slammed the ball home with hardly any time gone. 1-0 up and an air of confidence gradually filled the jokers camp.

It didn't take long as we continued to pass and probe to great effect. Law in particular showing lots of energy and finesse with one fine cross field pass that dissected the TGA backline and released our winger. Though the move eventually came to naught, it was class in my opinion.

Eventually our 2nd came when me (mokie) found myself in an advanced position and threaded a through ball for the onrushing Tosh who poked the ball past the keeper. Thank god Bib boy was following up with play as he tapped it home into an open net as the initial shot looked like it was just about to trickle past the post. 2-0.

Our 3rd goal came around the 30th minute mark as Tosh beat a couple of players before thumping an unstoppable shot just outside the box that whistled past the beleaguered keeper. 3-0 at the half as we looked comfortable.

The 2nd half soon kicked off under similarly sweltering conditions and the jokers soon turned up the heat even more. Awarded a freekick just outside the TGA box, top scorer Izwann stopped up and curled a sumptuous shot into the top corner. The keeper never moved and what a beauty it was. 4-0.

Returning son, Eugene soon followed likewise when we were awarded a freekick at the corner of the TGA box. We continue to suspect if it was intentional but well, the boy curled the ball into the top right hand corner leaving the keeper flapping and helpless. 5-0 and what beauties.

The 6th and final goal eventually came when I was able to release Tosh free and towards goal with another lovely threaded through ball. I have to admit that the build up was a beauty as the boys tiki taka-ed our way towards goal (a rarity for the jokers). Of course, our nepalese boy slotted the ball past the keeper at his near post to complete a well deserved hattrick!

Oh, we eventually conceded a goal today when complacency set in but I guess it's all just part of the game. 6-1 was the final score!

MOTM: Santosh had to be it for me as he proved a constant threat all game and also of course that bagful of goals to bring home. Nice. Notable performances from Hafiz, Law, Syafiq and Izwann who all stood out for me. Well done to the entire team in which everyone played their part in a thoroughly outstanding performance. Onwards to our Champions Cup game folks!!

300-esque performance

Bendemeer Sec, 1500 Hrs

YSOSRS FC 4 El Retador 3

(Izwann x2, Dilip x1, Syafiq x1)

Alright, I shant talk about the fact that we had almost an entirely new backline for the game. Neither will I talk about the fact that we had at least 2 men down with the flu bug in our 12 men squad.

What I will talk about is the character and desire shown by all. 12 men against possibly a team as strong as Intense and FMFC. The best of the division had to offer which we were looking to face with a seriously patched up squad.

Yet we did it.

1-0: 1st minute and some intricate link up between new boy Dilip and front man Izwann saw the latter side step one man before unleashing a 25 yarder into the top left hand corner of the Retador net. Sick.

2-1: After conceding a sickening equaliser, Dilip found himself free just inside the right hand side of the pen box. Cutting in and beating his marker, a fortuitous goal came about when the lad kicked the ground and somehow lobbed the ball with a weak attempt. The keeper however spilled the shot into the back of his net to our amazement. A goal nonetheless. Sweet.

It has to be said that Santosh and Izwann in particular were running them ragged in the 1st half. Chi was a rock at right back with Law grafting well in the middle too.

HT.

3-3: After conceding from a rocket of a freekick and then a header off a corner to trail 3-2. The fallen joker heads soon had something to cheer about when Syafiq who had just come on found Izwann with a nice through ball. Izwann once against side stepped one and fired a rocket of a shot from way out into the bottom left hand corner this time. Oooh you beauty!

4-3: With the morale of the team on a high and the jokers in the ascendency at this point of time, a left footed free kick swung in by new boy centreback, Hafiz beat everyone and was seemingly falling comfortably into the hands of the keeper. Yet, the ball chose to bounce awkwardly just in front of the keeper which was enough for Syafiq to pounce and poke home just outside the 6 yard box. In the lead and one which we never relinquished again!

FT.

MOTM: Several candidates of course with such a performance. Izwann was awesome up front. Santosh a non stop energy bunny. Law an effervescent presence in the middle. And our backline. Hafiz and Farhan connecting well and repelling as much as possible. But the man of the moment has to be our returning son for the day, Chi who answered the SOS call at the last minute and turned in a battling display at right back. He is a centre mid by nature folks. Kudos chi! Join us more often next time yo!
