Doing just enough...

Serangoon Garden Sec, 1500 Hrs

YSOSRS FC 2 Team Spirit 1

(Law x1, Mimi x1)

A debut for the jokers in the cup and on paper, we looked favourites for this very tie against the Division 10 Sunday League Champions in what was our first foray into the Espzen Champions Cup.

Sunday afternoon kickoff at a new location for the boys as the ulu venue of Serangoon Garden Sec played host. Yet our immediate thoughts on the size of the field was one of disappointment. Narrow on the flanks and a shorter pitch in general. More orgies in the middle to be expected again. Argh.

Well so it was, an orgy of a game. Messy and all. Yet we coped well with the initial attacks from our opponents as we tried to settle our much changed side. Recent games have seen wholesale changes in defense particularly so it was inevitable that we took some time to get into our stride.

1-0: The first goal came about when Syafiq was released down the right flank into space and the man of the moment cut a beautiful ball back into the path of Law. A strong contender for hustler of the team this year, he showed the attacking side to his game as he slid in and finish beautifully with a scissor-like movement that had the boys burst out in euphoria. Clinical yo!

In past games, the team probably would have gone on from strength to strength yet as the day would be like, we threatened but lacked a cutting edge up front with our nepalese winger out and our current hotshot striker late due to work. Law got close to a 2nd when his double effort cleared the line only for the ref to ignore his appeals as the game continued much to his dismay.

2nd half soon came as Spirit upped the tempo and intensity in closing us down. Despite that, my personal opinion was that we were very much in control of the game. Unfortunately a mistake at the back by our debutant keeper allowed for an easy tap in for the equaliser. 1-1 and all to play for again.

We had a chance thereafter in which Izwann did all the hardwork by dancing past a whole host of defenders only to finish with nonchalance. Some of that rubbed off on the ball as it decided to kiss the base of the post before rolling out for the goal kick. Aiyo-eh-ah.

2-1: As the game gradually drew closer, some delightfully simple ball work in the middle by Law and Syafiq saw the latter release debutant winger, Mimi. Controlling the ball superbly, a direct run straight into the box saw him finish with aplomb past the hopelessly stranded keeper. The winner as it eventually proved to be. Sweet lah mimi!

MOTM: 2 contenders today as Law was a massive presence both on the wings and in the middle. But Del Syafiqo, buoyed by a recent run of quality performances in our league games, turned in another smashing one as he capped it off with 2 assists in a tight game. Yesah!

Adios folks as we meet again next Saturday!
