We lose. But with our heads held high.

Woodlands Ring Sec, 1500 Hrs

YSOSRS FC 1 Team Intense 2

(Santosh x1)

As our journey through Division 1 goes on, the boys in white continue to face big name opposition on a weekly basis. This week was no different as we entertained probably the biggest name of them all aside from Armanis FC and FMFC. Team Intense. Having swept all before them so far in their 1st 4 games of the season and more astoundingly, comprehensively beating our huge rivals FMFC 4-1 in the process, the jokers went into this game with hope but on paper we were definitely the underdogs. With so much news filtering through about the abilities of our opponents today, there was an air of anxiety which was mixed with a tinge of excitement as the boys lined up against their adversaries for 80 minutes on a terrible Woodlands Ring pitch. What is happening to the pitch ar field warden. Damn jialat.

Oh wells, to add to the difficulty of our task, we were missing a whole hosts of players and more importantly had to deal with the drama of potentially lacking sufficient centre backs. Thank god Huijie answered the SOS call at the eleventh hour and together with our newly installed vice captain Ronnie boy, formed the central partnership at the back that was crucial in repelling much that came their way today.

Straight to the game as Intense could only gather 10 men for the start, the jokers burst out of the blocks with a 442 attacking formation that was meant to press and hopefully get the early goal. Much pressure was placed on the Intense backline, who struggled to get their passing game going on the bumpy pitch. And just as it was the tactical plan, the not so serious boys drew 1st blood in this big clash.

1-0: The first goal came within the 1st 5 minutes as a cross field ball from Mok found Santosh on the left bursting through on goal. With only the keeper to beat, our nepalese boy found the bottom right hand corner of the goal with a nonchalant outside foot finish to send the jokers into ecstasy . This partnership has been bearing fruit in recent weeks and I genuinely hope for more in the near future too. Lets go Toshie boy!

With intense finally up to their full complement of players, the worry was that we would capitulate as Intense flooded the midfield. Truth be told, the game pinged from side to side as neither team was able to get a grip on proceedings. However, never was there a point in the game where the jokers were overawed as everyone who featured played their hearts out. Intense probably had the better share of possession for the last 15 of the 1st half but they hardly threatened our goal.

Sadly that was until a dangerous inswinging corner by Intense that occurred in the absence of Ronnie boy who had been forced off in order to receive treatment after a back injury. Lacking concentration, one of the Intense boys (despite early warnings that he was a good header of the ball) got free and thumped a header home from inside the 6 yard box. All square with everything to play for as the half drew to a close.

The 2nd half resumed as Dinietov, Syafiq and Law formed the midfield triangle and they were flanked by the rejuvenated AhCool and ever present veteran, Rudee Tudee. With the team more or less the same, the mercurial talents of Dinietov on the ball and the added height of our twin towers meant that we were able to match and even dominate the central areas together with the persistent hustling of Law.

Time after time, we knocked on the doors of the Intense goal and after Juf fired a shot from just outside the box at the keeper, our top shot was presented with a half chance just inside the box. Toe poking the ball at goal, the entire bench were up in arms in anticipation that it would bulge the goal. Yet, as fate would have it, the keeper got his hands to the goal bound shot and oddly enough, AhCool who was seemingly in an onside position when he fired home the rebound had his effort ruled out for being offside. Ahh what a bummer.

As time ticked on, both sets of players looked increasingly contented to settle for a draw. Unfortunately for us it was not to be for once again, due to a lack of concentration in our defensive third. Defending against a freekick on the edge of the box by the left, confusion in setting up the wall quickly meant that the opposition striker was able to fire straight into goal with a low hard shot. Tough tough luck boys. And that was how it ended as despite pushing hard in the remaining few minutes of the game, another effort from ahcool that cannoned off the bar but was later blown as an offside again was all that we could muster.

MOTM: Ronald takes this one for me as he covered the defensive third superbly and commanded them well despite being a major doubt for the game with an injury. I have to say though that our entire defensive line did a fantastic job in denying the quick Intense wingers space for much of the game. Finally, the way that Dinietov danced and nutmegged his way through from a defensive midfield position in his languid yet effective manner deserves at least a mention in this column. Kudos dude. Keep it up man.

Gaffers words: I would like to focus on the positives here. The team spirit was excellent with those not playing constantly cheering the 11 who were on the field. I have to say that I absolutely love that boys. The aftermath of the game also saw players encouraging each other for despite the manner of the defeat, we attempted to pick the crestfallen ones up. Yes we deserved something from the game and it is no exaggeration that aside from the 2 goals, Intense did not have too many other clear cut chances. But let us be gracious in defeat and learn from the experience. Concentration in the future boys. One thing that I would like to keep seeing in our future games would be that spirit. Defeats would not be as painful when we lose as one, and victories would be that much sweeter. Let's take this journey one step at a time aite. I am honestly very proud of you guys. Let's keep on going boys.

League Match 5

Time: Be there by 2.20 PM
[Flagged late again and we are that much closer to losing 2 points. Early please]

Opponents: Team Intense FC

Venue: Woodlands Ring Sec (Grass)

Attire: White Top, Black Shorts and Black Socks

Arguably the biggest test of the season awaits the jokers, with the only team in the division still having a perfect record standing in the way come this Saturday. Team Intense will be hosts to the pretenders for the title at Woodlands Ring and the jokers are under no illusion of the mammoth task that awaits them come kickoff time at 3. Having succumbed to only 1 defeat so far in their 1.5 seasons in the Saturday top flight, and against ISA if I may add, Intense have proven to be a model of consistency and it would be a good learning platform for the boys.

No stranger to giant killing acts ourselves, we will be looking to make use of not only our skills but also our gradually solidifying team spirit. It has been evident in recent games and was particularly crucial in our match against Supernova where everyone sacrificed for the cause of the team, of course to the beat of a positive result. With a good sized squad to be expected, despite some concerns in the heart of the defense, we are licking our lips in anticipation as Saturday comes along. Regardless of what happens, let us produce a performance that we will not regret. Adios boys.

3 points, 2 goals and a thoroughly satisfying clean sheet

*Fugly expressions from our ballerina-like Law and keeper of e day, Heiqs

Springfield Sec, 1500 Hrs

YSOSRS FC 2 Supernova 0

(Santosh x1, Habib x1)

Typing this at the half time break for the Singapore vs M'sia game, I have to say that I have been thoroughly inspired by the performance put up by our Lions. Well similarly, the performance from the jokers today can be placed under the same bracket. With a whole host of players out of action, the small squad that trudged down to the excellent Springfield Sec field really responded to the call by the gaffer earlier in the week.

Another week of football and yet again, another week of firsts. A small squad of 15 with 2 guest players for that matter took to the field for the boys in white. On the other hand, just as it was looking likely that Nova would have the bare minimum of 7 for the start of the game, their numbers sprung and doubled for they eventually equalled our match day squad size with 15 as well. Oh boy... Knowing the quality they had in their ranks, we geared ourselves up for a long day under the blistering hot sun.

Kicking off, the idea was to sit and defend our half, in the process making use of our pace down the wings and up front to great effect. However, none of it was followed as Nova ran the show from the get go with Ubai and Saifiee his very able partner in the middle played twinkle toes and left our central trio huffing and puffing. Chances came and went as Nova failed to make their early dominance count.

On the other hand, after much communicating, the jokers finally clicked into action as those dangerous cross field balls to both Rudee and Santosh began to reap dividends.

* Youth is the way to go

1-0: After missing two glorious chances that were created in the first place due to his pace and tenacity, Santosh finally found himself on the end of a cross-field pass by Mok. Just when it looked like the chance had gone with the keeper rushing out and looking to claim, Tosh stepped on the gears and ate a whole load of that pretty darn cool thing called 'bravery' and took a stab at the ball before he was floored by the keeper. With the ball trickling to put us a goal up, our Nepalese boy laid on the ground, knocked out by the impact. What bravery and a crucial goal in what was proving to be a game of fine margins. That was how it ended at the half.

Running the changes at the half, the boys in white took to the field hoping to consolidate their position and at the same time play a similar soak and strike tactic. With Ubai having gone forward and now crowded out by both centre backs and Dinietov who had a good half at DM, Nova were limited to few chances. The same could have been said for us as both sides cancelled each other out in the engine room battle.

2-0: With Bib reinstated to his position up front for the remaining 15 minutes, both him and the very impressive Tosh hustled the Nova backline that was short on confidence at this point into giving away possession with a loose pass at the back. Noting their gaffer's pre-game warning of the reported failings at the back for Nova in recent games, both boys pounced on the ball and eventually sorted out who was going to take the final shot in the box. It fell to our young hotshot, Bib who calmly side footed it with his left peg into the bottom left hand corner of the goal to seal the points.

And with that, time ran out on the game.

MOTM: Santosh gets the nod for his unhuman like fitness and of course quality in the final third. Far from the finished product of course, but his performances in recent games have put a smile on the gaffer's face by showing not only the quality but also the commitment to match. A crucial goal on the day justifies the award. Keep it up Toshie boy. Special mention goes to the entire backline and keeper whom i felt sorted out their early failings well and handled the niffy wingers plus of course Ubai very very well.

Gaffers Thoughts: A solid performance against a very decent opposition. I like the fact that our midfield and attack of Rudee, Habib, Law, AhCool, Syafiq and Dinietov all hustled and played for the cause of the team. It was a solid team performance and also thoroughly professional. Hope you guys enjoyed the run out on a very hot day and let us look forward to our toughest test of the season come next Saturday. Let us stick together, play for one another and we have every chance of achieving a good result next week. See you boys.

League Match 4

Time: Be there by 2.20 PM
[Flagged late again and we are that much closer to losing 2 points. Early please]

Opponents: Supernova FC

Venue: Springfield Sec (Astro)

Attire: White Top, Black Shorts and Black Socks

League match 4 looms large and as the day approaches, the expected and final squad for the game has more or less been confirmed. It would probably be the smallest squad YSOSRS has had in almost 6 months with 14 warrirors expected to turn up for the day. With the inclusion of Mok's sunday teammate, KengSheng to help out with the numbers, we are likely to face a really difficult team in the mould of Supernova. Our friends from Division 2 has proved time and again that they are a really decent footballing side with the prowess of their captain/manager, Ubai posing the biggest threat. With a relatively depleted squad in terms of numbers and the possibility of their own gaffer being mobilised on the day itself, YSOSRS will have their backs to the wall for this tie.

However the equation remains the same with 3 crucial points being up for grabs, and the game will be won and lost by the team who wants it the most. The first test of our hunger came against FMFC and we showed that we wanted it more by grinding out a win. A setback was met in the tie against Teamcuzz and now comes yet another game in which desire is the key. The gaffer for YSOSRS has thrown down the gauntlet in this one and challenged the boys who will be turning up for the game to show their mettle in this potentially tricky tie. Game on boys.
